Don't Let Your Share of the Discover Settlement Slip Away
If your business accepted Discover credit cards between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2023, you may be eligible for compensation through the Discover Card Merchant Class Action Settlement. Tampa Roots helps merchants understand the process, identify missing MID history, and prepare for next steps.
What This Case Is About
The lawsuits allege that Discover misclassified certain consumer credit cards — including rewards and premium cards — as commercial cards. According to the allegations, that classification caused merchants and others in the payment chain to incur higher interchange fees over time. Discover denies the claims, and the Court has not determined wrongdoing.
Consumer Cards Classified as Commercial
Rewards cards, cashback cards, and premium consumer credit products were allegedly reclassified in processing systems.
Higher Interchange Fees
Commercial card interchange rates are typically higher than consumer card rates, which means merchants may have paid more per transaction than they should have.
16-Year Period
The covered period spans from January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2023 — over a decade and a half of Discover card transactions.
Settlement, Not a Verdict
Discover denies all claims. This is a class action settlement, meaning both sides agreed to resolve the dispute without the Court determining liability.
Alleged Rate Difference
Important note: This does not mean every transaction qualifies the same way. Final allocations depend on settlement administration, claim validation, MID identification, and other factors.
Why Merchants Miss Money
For many businesses, the challenge is not just filing a claim. It is reconstructing years of merchant processing history across locations, processors, DBAs, ownership changes, and account migrations.
Missing Historical Merchant Accounts
Older accounts may have been closed, merged, or lost in transitions — making it harder to establish a complete processing record.
Incomplete MID Identification
A merchant may have had dozens of MIDs across locations, processors, and years — many of which may not be immediately visible.
Old Processors & Lost Statements
Processor changes, acquisitions, and legacy systems make older payment statements difficult to locate or verify.
Ownership & DBA Changes
Business sales, rebranding, franchise restructuring, and DBA changes can fragment a merchant's historical processing identity.
How MID Identification Works
What is a MID?
A Merchant Identifier, or MID, is a unique code used in card-processing systems to identify a merchant account or location. A business may have multiple MIDs across time due to processor changes, multiple locations, acquisitions, DBAs, or account restructuring.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Discover merchant settlement, MID identification, and how Tampa Roots may support your review.
A MID is a unique code used in merchant-processing systems to identify a business account or location. Because many businesses changed processors, expanded, restructured, or operated under multiple DBAs, one business may have multiple MIDs associated with it over the 2007–2023 period.
The lawsuits allege that Discover classified certain consumer cards, such as rewards or premium cards, as commercial cards, which allegedly caused higher interchange fees to be charged. Discover denies the allegations.
Potentially yes. If the business accepted Discover cards during the covered period, current operating status or processor changes do not automatically eliminate eligibility. Historical records may still matter.
The exact value is not fixed here. Recovery depends on the settlement process, claim validation, MID allocation, supporting data, and the total number of valid claims against the settlement fund.
Claims must be submitted by May 18, 2026. Businesses should not wait until the last minute because gathering processing history and validating MID information can take time.
